Whenever I’m asked about what time to schedule family photo sessions anywhere in Phoenix valley, I suggest a time within 1-2 hours before sunset. Taking family photos in a place like the Salt River in Mesa or even on one of my secret trails in Central Phoenix is especially beautiful because the light shows off the natural beauty of the area that much more!
This post is all about what golden hour is and why I prefer this time of day to others. I do have some daytime sessions available, but I prefer to shoot in the hours leading up to sunset. This is called the ‘Golden Hour.’ During this time, the lighting is absolutely perfect
The Perks of Golden Hour:
You get soft sunlight that is most flattering for portraits as well as shiny sun flares (bursts of light)
There are no strong shadows or squinty eyes like there are from the blinding sun at high noon.
In the summer, the weather is cooler during golden hour, so you’re able to relax a little better knowing there isn’t sweat running down your face or making stains on your shirt.
During Golden Hour, everything is warm and pretty and gives off a magical feeling.
We can also get some sweet silhouette shots as the sun is going down on the horizon.
The magic of light creates portraits that are both artistic and flattering and although the timing can sometimes be a little tricky when sunset is around the same time as bedtime, the resulting images are so well worth it!
